2017 Tempranillo - Quinta Refugio

Tempranillo is definitely not the most widely planted grape in Santa Barbara County so it was quite the surprise to find a small planting in 2015 with vines that are over 30 years old.  Similar to many other things in life sometimes it takes a bit of time to learn something new. Tempranillo and this site have been a bit of a learning process. While the wines of 2015 and 2016 were not bad, they were not ideal so we bulked them out.  In 2017 we harvested the grapes a bit riper and it was all the difference. Tempranillo has so much tannin it needs a bit of ripe fruit character to balance it out. We really hope you like this wine and find that it is reminisent of some of the great examples of Spanish tempranillo.  This wine will be best on the last really chilly night of spring, or if you cellar it long enough it will be softer and rounder when the leaves fall.
