2018 Chardonnay - Santa Barbara County

2018 is only our second year making chardonnay and we have found it works quite well when we make it just the same way we do our sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc.  However we did leave a small portion of the grapes to sit on their skins overnight before pressing. We did this to draw out a bit more structure and richness, we like the way it enhanced the final blend.  We worked with three fruit sources, two in the Sta. Rita Hills, one off of Santa Rosa Rd. and the other on the Hwy 246 corridor. Both of those are the famed Wente Clone. The third source is up Foxen Canyon Rd. in the Santa Maria Valley, the grower there has no idea what the plant material is, they call the vines the “old ones.”
